How often should you check your radiation gloves and lead aprons for cracks?

When investing in high quality radiation gear, medical professionals and patients alike want to make sure their gear stays in excellent shape. Investing time, money, and care on high-quality protection means that buyers want the most life out of their radiation equipment. In fact, given the extremely important role of radiation PPE, it is fundamental to routinely inspect your radiation equipment. Inspecting radiation equipment leads to safer, more sanitary practices. However, the proper timeline for inspection, in addition to proper inspection practices may not be universal knowledge. As a leader in the radiation equipment segment, Attenutech believes in the importance of not only supplying customers with quality protection, but keeping them informed on how to maintain it.

Attenutech provides radiation protection in the form of aprons, gloves, glasses, and more. Complete these protections with care for ideal maintenance for longevity. Attenutech supplies sterile gloves to use in medical and radiation environments. However, for ease and sanitation purposes, the sterile gloves are single use only. This is beneficial and means that they are one item that will never need to go through inspections to ensure its integrity. Sterile gloves never need inspection. However, aprons, thyroid collars, hats, and all other lead radiation equipment are items that need inspection regularly as they age and go through usage.

Additionally, when inspecting your radiation aprons, the recommended time intervals to check them is annually. Once per year, take out all of your lead aprons that are in use, and lay them out for inspection. However, if you notice tears, scratches, or signs of pitting or cracking on your lead aprons, they need thorough inspection immediately. All radiation protection aprons need regular checking and monitoring for substrate integrity. At Attenutech, we recommend using radiographic or fluoro operating at 70-90kV to inspect your aprons. Lines may indicate cracks. Dots may appear indicating air bubbles which do not compromise the protection. Consult your Radiation Safety Officer for verification of inspection results. Any protective apron that shows holes, tears or radiation leakage must be taken out of service immediately and either repaired or destroyed.

In addition, Attenutech also supplies annual inspection stickers to place on your radiation garments. These stickers help you to keep track of your yearly inspections. They are bright and color coded. This gives them easy visibility from a distance or when hanging up in storage. The annual inspection stickers are an excellent way for men and women to quickly and efficiently tell which aprons have been inspected and when. Attenutech also supplies a complete line of lead apron storage equipment and lead apron cleaners. This also helps to extend the life of your radiation garments by ensuring that they are properly kept and sanitized.
